Sensitive skin that becomes red, sore and inflamed very easily is usually the result of a mild to moderate allergic reaction to some form of stressor. The stressor can be environmental e.g. cold air, pollutants, chemicals, fragrances or something that you have eaten e.g. very spicy food. Your first step should be to eliminate obvious stressors so you can identify the trigger(s) that make your skin flare up.
Next, you should select good quality skin care products specifically designed for sensitive skin. Look for unscented products that are free from known triggers and usually marketed as hypoallergenic. For example, many moisturisers contain lanolin which is a chemical obtained from wool and is frequently linked to skin allergies. Be aware that some fragrance free/hypoallergenic skin care products can still be overly harsh and may trigger skin redness. This is especially true of anti-aging products and exfoliators.
Consider using Aloe Vera gel. This is an exceptionally calming and natural product, which can really take the heat out of a red skin outbreak. Make sure the product you choose is as pure as possible and definitely fragrance free.
Finally, if you continue to suffer from sensitive skin consider getting a patch test at your doctor or local dermatologist’s office. This may reveal what is triggering your flare-ups and make it easier for you to steer clear of substances that might be making your skin worse.
